Nodus: an open source research workspace for academic work

Academic research increasingly depends on a large number of digital tools. References may be managed in Zotero, books and papers are stored as PDFs, notes are kept in a separate application, databases are built somewhere else and AI assistants are increasingly being used to analyse sources or help with writing. Each of these tools can work well on its own, but moving information between them can become part of the research process itself.

Nodus is an open source research workspace designed to bring many of these activities together. It allows researchers to work with their documents and references, organise notes and ideas, build research databases and use AI with their own sources. It can work with a Nodus library or connect to an existing Zotero library, so it does not require abandoning tools that are already part of a research workflow.

The idea is to provide a practical environment for the kind of work that researchers, students and teachers do every day. In that sense, Nodus is intended to be a scholar's workspace, rather than simply another application for storing information.

A research workflow built around sources, ideas and connections

The main idea behind Nodus is relatively simple. Academic research is not only a process of collecting documents. Sources lead to ideas, ideas are connected to other ideas, arguments develop from those connections and the resulting work eventually needs to be supported by specific evidence. A useful research environment therefore needs to preserve some of those relationships instead of treating every document, note or reference as an isolated item.

Nodus provides a library where documents and bibliographic information can be organised alongside notes, ideas and other research material. Documents can be read within the application and searched semantically, while ideas extracted from sources can be connected to other elements of the project. This makes it possible to move from an individual document to the ideas it contains and then to the wider context in which those ideas are being used.

The application also includes tools for comparing material across a research corpus. Depending on the workflow, this can include identifying relationships between ideas, examining agreements and contradictions or looking for areas where the existing material does not adequately address a research question. These tools are intended to assist the researcher rather than determine the interpretation of the sources.

This approach is particularly relevant to projects that accumulate a large amount of material over time. A doctoral thesis, for example, may involve hundreds of books and articles, thousands of pages of notes and a growing collection of arguments and references. Keeping these elements connected becomes increasingly useful as the project develops.

AI is integrated into the research process rather than separated from it

Nodus also includes a range of AI tools, but the purpose is not simply to provide another general purpose chatbot. The emphasis is on using AI in relation to the material that the researcher is actually working with.

Documents can be analysed to extract ideas and relevant passages, while semantic search can be used to find related material across a collection. Nodus can also use the information in a research library for conversations and more extensive research reports. Where citations are available, the application can connect generated material back to the sources from which it was derived.

The system can work with different AI providers and can also be configured to use compatible local models. This gives researchers more control over how their material is processed and makes it possible to use Nodus without depending on a single AI provider.

The distinction is important because academic research requires more than a plausible answer. Researchers need to know what evidence supports a claim and be able to return to the original source. AI can help with finding and organising information, but the interpretation and final judgement remain with the researcher.

Nodus is organised around different kinds of research and learning

Not every project has the same requirements, which is why Nodus is organised into different vaults. Each vault provides a workspace adapted to a particular type of activity while sharing the same underlying approach to documents, information and knowledge.

The Academic vault is intended for research projects involving sources, references, notes, ideas, databases and analytical tools. The Teaching vault focuses on university and educational workflows, including teaching materials, courses, assessments and reusable resources. The Study vault is designed around learning and study activities, while the Database vault provides a more flexible environment for projects that require structured information.

Other vaults address more specialised workflows, including genealogy, worldbuilding, primary sources and oral history. The purpose of this structure is not to require users to adopt every part of Nodus. A researcher can use the environment that corresponds to their project and ignore the others.

Nodus also connects with tools that researchers may already use. Its Zotero integration allows an existing reference library to be used within the research workflow, while the browser extension can be used to collect material from the web. Integrations with Word and LibreOffice provide another way of bringing research material into the writing process.

An open source project that started from academic research

Nodus started as a personal project. It was originally developed to deal with the practical problems that appeared while organising material for a PhD research project. As more requirements emerged, the application expanded into a broader research and knowledge management environment.

That origin still influences how the project develops. Features are tested against real research workflows rather than being designed solely around a list of generic productivity features. The aim is to make it easier to work with large collections of sources and the ideas that emerge from them, while keeping the underlying material accessible to the person doing the research.

Nodus is free and open source under the AGPL-3.0-only licence. It is designed as a local-first application and does not require an account to use the desktop application. Researchers can therefore work with their own documents and choose which external services, if any, they want to connect to the application. The open-source and local-first guide documents the licence, storage model and outgoing requests.

The project is still under active development, and many parts of the research workflow can be improved further. The long-term goal is not to replace every application that researchers already use, but to provide a place where sources, notes, ideas and research activities can remain connected throughout a project.
